Westport LNG System: Advantages
Economical
Natural gas prices continue to track below those of diesel fuel. The average price for natural gas is up to 25% less per gallon than diesel*. The Westport LNG system enables fleet operators to take full advantage of this price differential and deliver significant fuel cost savings.

Virtually all of North America's natural gas supply is continentally sourced, making natural gas is less vulnerable to foreign supply disruption and price volatility.

Natural Gas: A Fuel of Choice
Natural gas is one of the world's most abundant sources of primary energy, and has been in use as a transportation fuel for more than 60 years. Today, with over 4.5 million vehicles operating worldwide on natural gas, it is among the safest of transportation fuels. Natural gas is non-toxic. It is much lighter than air and diffuses quickly if released, unlike diesel fuel that pools on the ground.

Environmental
The Westport LNG system sets the benchmark for reducing air contaminants from heavy-duty trucks. NOx emissions are reduced by 50% and CO2 by up to 20% over equivalent diesel engines. Natural gas—composed primarily of methane—burns more cleanly than diesel fuel or gasoline because it has more hydrogen and less carbon.

Typical Diesel Molecule and Methane Molecule

The low carbon content of natural gas burned with high pressure direct injection (HPDI) efficiency reduces greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 15–20%. This means an average reduction of about 30 tons of GHGs for a truck covering 80,000 miles annually. For a fleet of 100 trucks that’s a GHG reduction of 30,000 tons in one year.

Westport’s LNG system significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions, which are thought to be a major cause of climate change. When it comes to protecting public health and the environment, natural gas is the cleanest fuel available today.
